Twenty-nine
years ago, the company’s founder saw the opportunity to take log ends left
behind by a large logging operation and convert them into beautiful pieces of
furniture. As a result, he started a program to take these log ends and existing
local talent to teach youth the art of woodworking. This program serves as
a mechanism to get youth off the streets.
Today the
company employs about two hundred and fifty people,
producing finished and unfinished
lumber, furniture, doors, and household items. All timber is extracted
from managed forests using environmentally conscience techniques; the waste
is chipped and used to make particleboard.
The factory is certified by the FSC through the Rainforest Alliance Smart
Wood Chain of Custody Programs and they have connected with
large conservation groups to recognize their sustainable timber management
programs.
The
company’s commitment is not limited to the forest, it also extents to the local people, especially in the area of educational development for youth.
Therefore, a portion of all profits is committed to the training and mentoring of
area youth through the development of woodworking and the science
industry.
The
company is committed to the healthy development of man, the preservation of
nature and nurturing a sustainable interaction of the two.
